Register Your Trailer

Getting out on the open road is one of the greatest joys in life. But it can be expensive when you add up sales tax on purchases and personal property tax on registration. That’s where we come in. We are LLCTLC.com, your one stop shop for starting a Montana LLC and getting your trailer registered.

No matter what state you call “home,” you can start an LLC in Montana and make purchases under your LLC’s name. This allows you the same tax benefits that Montana state residents enjoy on trailer purchases and registration. Your trailer would be owned by your LLC company, which in turn is controlled by you.

Registering Your Trailer in Montana

Your trailer can be registered in the state of Montana to avoid paying property tax on registration fees. Your LLC ownership also gives you the privilege of not paying any sales tax on trailer purchases. Depending on the state you live in, this can add up to sizable savings!

How Does a Montana LLC Work?

We will help you every step of the way, but here’s an idea of how it works:

  1. We will file your LLC in Montana and register your trailer.
  2. As your registered agent, we will keep your information on file for you.
  3. Once your LLC has been filed, it is considered a resident of Montana.
  4. Your LLC’s resident status allows you to buy a trailer, sales tax free.
  5. You will not have to pay personal property tax when registering your trailer.
  6. We charge one flat fee of $1295 and handle everything from filing your LLC to registering your trailer.

If you would like to register more than one trailer or have a vehicle that needs registering, please contact us for special pricing.

Buying a trailer using your LLC is simple. Some of our clients choose to pay with personal income, while others opt to start a business account at their bank in their LLC’s name. If you choose this option, you can make yourself and anyone else an authorized signer on the LLC account. This will allow signers to make purchases under the LLC using checks or a debit card. An LLC account allows you to keep your business expenses separate, and can also help track your expenses in one easy place.

How the Savings Add Up

If you live in a state that has a significant sales tax rate (let’s say it is 10%), you can avoid paying this simply by buying the trailer under your LLC, which is a resident of Montana. Whether you buy a utility trailer, snowmobile trailer, boat/watercraft trailer, toy hauler, or other type of trailer…you pay zero sales tax!

Why Also Own an LLC in Another State?

Some of our clients are interested in additional tax benefits beyond owning a Montana LLC and registering their trailer. Several states offer other benefits with LLC ownership, which include:

  • Wyoming LLCs do not have to pay state income tax or capital gains taxes on assets that are subject to these types of taxes. Wyoming also allows for LLC owners to file their paperwork with a registered agent without having to list their name or contact information.
  • New Mexico LLCs are similar to Wyoming in that they do not require that your name or address be listed as the LLC owner in the paperwork you file. An additional benefit is that you don’t have to hire a registered agent.
  • Delaware LLCs are an option if you plan to do business outside of the state of Delaware using your LLC; in those instances they do not charge corporate taxes. This state has a dedicated legal system to help with corporate law cases, which can speed up the lawsuit resolution process.

We can register vehicles in Montana only, however, we can help you file an LLC in any of the above states. If you have questions about anything, please give us a call.
